Cadet Guthrie joined on 17/8/1920 and was allocated to "C" Company, Macroom Castle. He was the driver of the second vehicle of the patrol which was ambushed at Kilmichael on 28/11/20. He was the only person who escaped the ambush only to be intercepted by the IRA on his way back to Macroom and summarily executed and his body buried in a bog. His body was not recovered until 1926 and he is now buried in the Church of Ireland cemetery in Inchgeela, Co Cork. HM Government would not pay compensation to the family until proof was supplied by the new Irish government.
